This week, I started my internship in a kindergarten classroom at Mylan Park Elementary, and I have learned so much already! It was the first time I had been at the school for a whole day, so it was interesting to experience that. I'm also surprised that I genuinely like working with kindergartners as much as I do. I have previously worked with upper elementary students and enjoyed that as well,so I thought kindergarten might not be for me. I am surprised to find that that assumption about myself was wrong!
I think the thing I like the most about kindergarten is that they are literally learning something every day, whether it is something academic, emotional, or social. They are learning how to behave and interact with others, as well as basic skills such as reading, writing, and number sense. I am already excited about seeing how much they progress from now until the end of the year. I'm thankful that I got to be there right from the start, at the first day of school. This way,not only do I become a stable person in their lives, I am able to see exactly where each student starts in terms of academic knowledge, social skills, etc. It is going to be a great year!
