Characteristics # 3 and #7

  1. The third Characteristic of the Novice Teacher states: “We believe that the novice teacher should recognize that teaching is a professional, moral, and ethical enterprise, should understand moral issues and ethical practices in educational environments, and should have developed ethical frameworks which facilitate effective teaching.” To me, this basically states that not only is being a teacher a job, it is a position as a role model. Teachers are not perfect, but they must make the best decisions they can as they have lots of people (students as well as others in the community) looking up to them.

For this Characteristic, I will include my Philosophy of Education paper. In this paper, I wrote my beliefs on what a teacher should be. One of the most important qualities that I think a teacher should possess is caring about his or her students. This means that teachers should always look out for the best interests of the students. If I keep this in mind, I am sure it will make me a more successful teacher and help me to make the best possible decisions in all aspects of my life. I want to be a good role model for my students.

The seventh characteristic states “We believe the novice teacher should effectively integrate content and pedagogy”. Content refers to the material being taught, and pedagogy refers to the knowledge of how to teach any kind of material or concepts to kids. To be an effective teacher, you really cannot only possess one skill or the other. You must successfully intertwine both of them.

For the Characteristic, I can include my learning cycle for science. My learning cycle is about the solar system, but we are mostly focusing on the planets. In preparing for this learning cycle, I read and learned more about the solar system than I ever have in my life. I wanted to be prepared to answer any questions that my students may have about the solar system. I also designed this lesson using the 5-E method for inquiry. This has proven to be an effective way to teach science to children. Using both the scientific knowledge and the newly-learned 5-E model for instruction proved to be a great combination for a science unit.

  2. For Characteristic 3, you could also use your classroom management plan that you are developing in EDUC 401. Managing the classroom is very important and definitely should reflect a ethical, moral, and professional setting. This plan is an example of how you show these characteristics.

For Characteristic 7, you could also use your literacy workstations unit because it develops a wide variety of content and pedagogy. It is a great sampling of pedagogy because it has large group instruction, small group instruction, and work station planning. All of these things can focus on different skills at different paces.
