  1. I think that most of the assessments I have had since being in the Benedum 5-Year Program have been authentic assessments. I say this because in the classes I have taken, we have rarely had a typical final exam. Rather, we have projects throughout the year to work on. I believe these help us learn more and also give our teachers a way to assess us. For example, I have done several Power Points, both by myself and with groups, on different topics in the education field (No Child Left Behind, Special Education, etc.). These were authentic assessments because the information we were covering was pertinent to our real life future careers. It was not just matching vocabulary words on a test or filling in bubbles on a Scan tron. The projects forced us to explore the subject(s), not just spit back information on a paper or test that we probably wouldn't remember later. I still remember facts about No Child Left Behind that I doubt I would know if I just quickly memorized them for a test. To make it more authentic, assessments from the teacher could provide more constructive criticism on how we as the students could do better for next time.

Question: Do you like that we have more project-based assessments rather than tests, like people in other majors might have? Do you think these projects are more helpful to us? Why or why not?

  2. I agree. I feel once I got my GEC requirements completed the assessments became more project/portfolio based. I like this as well. I like to show what I learned in this manner because I sometimes don't comprehend the test questions and therefore get a bad grade. I think we do have more project-based assessments in this major because in the education world this is what we do to present. I feel this is preparing us for our careers. We won't hand our principal a scan-tron showing him how we have progressed during a school year. We would give him a portfolio or present it in a powerpoint. Because of this, I feel they are extremely helpful. We will definately use this again, we retain it more, and it will be to our benefit.
