Intern Reflections 10/21/11

  1. This week, I was in charge of planning both literacy and math stations. This was more work than I had anticipated! For literacy, first I had to come up with a theme. I decided to focus on the letters C and A, since those are the first letters children should learn according to Orton Gillingham. I planned to do C activities on Monday and Tuesday and A activities on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday would be used to finish up whatever the students didn't get to finish during the week.

Planning stations taught me a lot! The students needed a lot of assistance with three out of the five stations, even though when I planned them I thought they were pretty basic. This meant that I was constantly running in between those three stations, trying to help 12-15 students understand what they were doing. Another challenging aspect was that students finished their work at all different times. This meant that I had to move them on to the next activity and run around the room getting them the supplies they needed, while also trying to assist the lower students in cutting, writing, and understanding the concepts of what they were supposed to be learning. By Friday, I was exhausted. The classroom aide told me that for that reason, she usually makes sure most of the stations are work that the students can do independently. I will definitely do that next time!
