Characteristics of the Novice Teacher

2 comments:

  1. The fourth Characteristic of the Novice Teacher states that “the novice teacher should be a facilitator of learning for all students”. Nearly every classroom is full of students with different skill levels and backgrounds. It is crucial for teachers to reach every individual student in order to fulfill his or her highest potential. Teachers must get to know each student’s strengths and weaknesses so that lessons can be planned in a way that is effective for all learners.

For this characteristic, I will probably include my Literacy Workstations Unit that I completed last semester in EDUC 461. This shows how I differentiated a reading unit among four different readiness levels (high, medium-high, medium-low, and low).

The eighth characteristic states that “the novice teacher should be a reflective practioner”. This means that the teacher must reflect on any educational events and think about what was good and/or bad about each of them. By doing this, the teacher can make choices that will consistently improve his or her teaching and thus improve the students’ learning.

For this characteristic, I will include my blog. Since tutor year, I have wrote and reflected about many of the things I’ve experienced as a beginning teacher. This blog shows that I have reflected on events and made choices based on what worked and didn’t work in this classroom.

  2. Your literacy workstations could also be used for characteristic 5, which states you should have in-depth knowledge of pedagogy. The project will definitely show a wide range of pedagogy for literacy instruction.

Your blog could also be used for characteristic 2, which states that you should be an effective communicator. Throughout the years in the program, you are using the blog to communicate with mentor teachers, teacher coordinators, and your peers.
